Com(pli)ment Spam In WordPress

I’ve been getting an absolute *flood* of comment spam lately that consists of effusive and completely generic compliments on the website, some in English, a few in German, with no obvious spam links.

All have been caught and put up for moderation by WordPress’s builtin spam protection mechanism, so none have appeared on the site.

I wonder what the theory there is. Maybe they’re hoping that I approve at least one of them, so that the commenter can get whitelisted or something, and later come back and spam the pants off me.

I’m pretty impressed with WordPress’s out of the box spam protection — that it has blocked them all so far and put them into moderation. I don’t think a single piece of comment spam has actually made it to the site since I upgraded to WordPress 1.5.
