  1. When I was a staff driver in Korea, I came across an accident on MSR1, which is the main highway running the length of the country. It’s pretty curvy and has lots of little hills, and there’s next to no shoulder in some spots, so coming across an accident meant having to thread past it without slowing down too much, because people were always getting rear-ended.

They have these little utility trucks in Korea that look a lot like the old Econoline pickups.* We called them “bongo trucks,” which is evidently the name Kia sells them under, though that may not have been their formal model name until the late ’90s. Anyhow, they come in a bunch of configurations including special tank trucks used to carry live cuttlefish.

The accident we were running up on was a capsized cuttlefish bongo. It had spilled its payload of live cuttlefish everywhere. We couldn’t stop, so we drove over them.
