Confessions of a Community College Dean: Ask the Administrator: Stopping the Cycle of Abuse
This cheers me up considerably about not having stuck it out and gotten a Ph.D. in Classical Languages.
On the flipside, I have several friends who did become professors and are pretty happy with their lives.
And it’s not like I got a real job till I was about 30 anyway.
Depressing — but I’m not sure it’s necessarily true. I think it is hard to find a job after getting a Ph.D. (I don’t have a permanent one yet), but everyone I know who has finished a Ph.D. *has* a full time job within a year or two. It might not be fancy, it might be at a community college rather than a university, but they do exist. Part of the archaic abuse that this author writes about, I’ve noticed, is the dire stream of warnings about how hard it is to get a job and how we’re really just wasting our time. Of course, all the people saying this FOUND JOBS.
