Jacob “American Pictures” Holdt on the Klan

Danish photographer Jacob Holdt has been known for decades for his anti-racism work. His book American Pictures is a classic documentary work on poverty and homelessness in America.

Lately he’s been hanging out with Klansmen.

This essay is one of the most remarkable things I’ve read in a long time.

  1. I was blown away by this. I also cringed at his self-regard, patronizing tone, and descriptions of his subjects: “fat and ugly”, “uneducated”, etc. If any of these folks have internet access, that could undo a lot of goodwill.

  2. I didn’t come away with quite the same impression you did, but I can see what you’re talking about. I guess it didn’t quite strike me the same way.
