I originally tried putting xubuntu on the box and had the same problems; in fact, I was in worse straits because I had less access to tools to help me configure things right, without the full GNOME desktop. The whiz-bang is gone -- that problem's solved. Resolution is what's holding me back now. 800x600 sucks! Don’t know about that.
